The date for the annual collision between Italy and Colorado Springs has been set for July 8, 2012. That’s the day the 90th “Race to the Clouds” will be held at Pikes Peak International Raceway (PPIR), with race classes that include stock car, exhibition, open wheel, and of course motorcycles.
Competitors will have to overcome the thin air at 10,000 feet and above, as the lack of oxygen takes its toll on both drivers and machines. Engines can lose up to 30% of their power from the thinner air, because the course at PPIR finishes at an altitude of 14,110 feet.
Not ready to strap yourself on an Italian rocket just yet? Not to worry, there will be plenty of excitement for spectators too, with pre-race events happening all week long:
• Tuesday, July 3: Tech Inspection @ PPIR
• Wednesday July 4 – Friday July 6: Practice/Qualifying runs @ PPIR
• Friday, July 6: Fan Fest featuring motorcycles jumpers, beer gardens, live bands, and the Denver Bronco cheerleaders.
This year’s competitors have an extra obstacle to overcome: last year’s record of 09:51.278 set by Nobuhiro Tajima. Stay tuned to the Motorcycle Insurance Quote blog for updates on the action.
